The June Edit

Whether you are digging out the bunting this week or escaping it all, we hope you are having a lovely half term. This month our edit includes some inspirational parent-led action, game changer robes for the beach and the best of June cinema releases.... To infinity and beyond!

Did you know that you can apply to your local council to close your street to cars for up to 3 hours and turn it into a play area for children!? Playing Out was started in 2009 in Bristol, by two Mums frustrated that kids in their neighbourhood weren't able to play outside their homes safely. With the help of neighbours, they closed their street to traffic and opened it up for play. This small, parent-led action has become a national movement with councils all over the country now facilitating it free of charge. Read all about Play Streets here, including how you can set up your own. There are also links to relevant and inspiring webinars, talks, books, films and creative projects.

If you have ever been a human tent for a tween getting changed on the beach, you'll know their struggles getting in and out of swimwear whilst battling paranoia that someone might glance their way. Towelling robes have been a game changer. Literally. There are a few on the market now, most at eye watering prices, but small biz Gorilla Robes have created a unique change robe that is not only more affordable but every soft towelling inner, waterproof outer robe is made form 100% recycled plastic bottles. Founded and designed in West Sussex, the widened sleeves enable arms to change swimwear underneath easily.

There are a few good family movies to see at the Cinema this month, including these long awaited follow ups:
Top Gun sequel, Maverick, (12+) is finally out, grab your popcorn and favourite wing-man! Lightyear, (PG), out 17th June, is an origin story of the 'real' life hero that inspired the toy. Marcel The Shell with shoes on. (PG) out 24th June, is about a little shell being interviewed about his life for a documentary.

TIP: If you are ever stuck wondering whether a movie, programme, book, podcast, game, or app is appropriate for your child(ren), check it on Common-sense media, where all of the above are rated by parents and kids, for an excellent guideline on age ratings.
